The Moon Girl

Chapter 1
A Girl, and a Moon.

He looked up at the moon.

The road to enter the base was dire with obstacles. The curious of all sorts, and the military police whose job it was to keep them out of the way. The Press, all trying desperately to pry answers from the tinted glass that  separated them. That is all without counting the various gates,  and checkpoints, and authorizations. He could freely stare at the moon, without feeling he was wasting time at all.

In fact, he considered staring  at the moon basically part of the job.  That was, after all, where this whole thing had started. Perhaps, he felt, merely staring at the moon might yield some answers to the  unexpected find. That's what everybody wanted, right? Answers. His job, at least partially, was to get answers.

He turned off the radio, when he realized the voices yelling inside it where basically outside, anyway. The dark S.U.V, vaguely reciprocating the flashes of light that now assaulted it, lumbered past the crowd, and next to the window a young M.P. stepped  next to the window.  He seemed undecided and nervous as to knock on the window, but his hesitation was unnessesary, as the driver of the vehicle  lowered the window, still staring at the moon.

"Sir..." asked the M.P. The man answered by showing him a badge. "Looks like everything is in order, Mr  Diamond." The driver, a robust,   tightly dressed Black man with short cut hair, black suit, and dark glasses replied, starign back at the crowd: "If everything was in order, son, we'd both be somewhere else."

The M.P. laughed at the gesture, cycling through all the events that lead to him guarding this gate, far too many  to tell at this juncture, but soon corrected himself.  He cupped his mouth to launch a yell at the crew behind the gate. "He's clear!  Open!" The cold vapor of his breath  became evident.

As the various fences and land barriers where removed by the on duty military,  Jack Diamond faced the young M.P. "What do you think?" The young man looked, afraid to break military ettiquette. "At ease, soldier. After tonight, we might all get demoted."

The young M.P.  replied as if he had just been untied: " It doesn't matter what I think Sir. I'm not gonna guess, sir.  Whatever I can guess is probably wrong. Sir."  Mr Diamond smiled. The young man was right, obviously.  The find had been already pegged as lots of things.  A petrified angel.  A gift from extraterrestrials. Some people thought it was evidence that man had once lived in the moon. ANd to some, it was hoax.

Diamond dreaded the idea of it being a hoax. He'd seen plenty of hoaxes. His work, as a member of the Meta and Unnaturally Generated Entity Network, lead him to far more  men dressed as bigfoot than anyone really deserves.  This one might top them all, though.

For, half a month ago, you see, a report came in that they'd found a statue on the moon.  A statue of a young woman.  Before the astronauts even decided whether to give a ride to this unussual  piece of selenite sculpture to our planet, the news spread. They called it "The Moongirl".

The amounts of resources that have to have been wasted on  this as a hoax would have been been so great, everytime Jack Diamond thought about it, he was sure whoever would have done such a thing deserved to do be in jail. But his mind would then wander the opposite direction.

"If this is real..." he would start to think, and he'd run himself through all the questions all over again.  Why's and Hows and  such.  He wanted answers, like everybody wanted answers. He didn't consider being the one who had to get them a prized posittion.

"If you get it right though, I owe you a beer." joked Diamond. The M.P. suddenly got serious again. "Sir, my only guess is that she's not from the moon." He paused. "You know whatever she is isn't gonna make anybody happy, right sir?"

"Right you are." sneered Jack Diamond.  The S.U.V. was swallowed by the gates of the base, still refuting every flash of photography, and volleying every  other light shone upon it.

Jack Diamond made his way to a sterile corridor, decorated by armed soldiers every 6 steps. He was joined by a woman in a red dress, with short, sidewards hair. She was talking on the phone when   she joined him in his walk.

"You get them to sign us 20 percent of everything. Without us, you couldn't even HAVE a space program. No one cares about that...well, it's not our fault you can't keep a secret, is it?" She hung up, then turned to Diamond. "It was the President."

Mr Diamond just scoffed. "Ms Fernandez, I understand Natas industries is very influential in this kinds of things. But there's a protocol to go through." The woman stared at him, as if to silently refute any such protocol as anatema.

"What have you found out?" Asked Fernandez. Diamond begrudgingly replied: "Same as everyone.  We found a statue on the moon. That's it. The rest ...it's kind of my job to find..."

His cellphone rung. He looked at the number, and winced as he put it away. "Good God!" He exhaled. Ms Fernandez, as if  cued. "Speaking of things that can't be true, have you talked to her already?" Jack Diamond shook his head. "Who are you talking about?"

Fernandez raised her eyebrows. "The Moongirl, Jack Diamond. Did you talk to the Moongirl?"

Jack Diamond just stared at her. He refused after that to reply to her He went to the storage room, now turned into a makeshift interrogation room, where they told him the Moongirl had stood.

In between the Hazmat dressed soldiers, and plastic chairs, there, with the spotlight  shining directly on her, stood a naked woman. Her skin a soft brown, her hair  long and dark. Her nose a sharp profile, and her eyes  arched and severed, like an eagle's.  She had in her neck metal choker, with a large, red gem in it's center.

Jack Diamond motioned to Fernandez, as if to ask "is this it?". After a confirming nod, he pulled out a device from his jacket, he motioned to the woman to sit down, and she did. He put the device in the table, just between them, and pushed a button. He took several deep breaths and stared down at the table.

"What is this?" asked the woman, in a voice  as sharp as her eyes.  Jack Diamond stared at her. "It's a recording device, Ma'am. If this is our first encounter with beings from another planet, then our conversation is recorded, so that everyone can hear it."

"Surely not everyone  will talk with me. I don't know what everyone will achieve by hearing what we talked." Jack Diamond was at unsure how to reply to that. "Ma'am, I'm Jack Diamond, I work for M.U.G.E.N., a division of the government that deals with...things we can't explain." The Moongirl stared intently. "Things you can't explain?" He interrupted almost immediately. "Things that can't  be explained. Things that don't normally happen on this earth.  Monsters. Demons. And occassionally, it seems, naked women who appear on the moon. I want to tell you ma'am, that if  this is a joke...it's not a funny one. I'm going to ask you a series of questions, and you will answer them. Are we agreed?"

A  deadly silence engulfed the small room. The Moongirl crossed her arms. " I will tell what I can." "Good" replied Diamond, constricting how intimidated he was. He pulled out a file. " On July 20th, Astronauts  on the Space station Young observed a statue on the surface of the moon. It was brought all the way here. Ma'am, are you that statue?" he asked, almost balking at the ridiculousness of his question.  She closed her eyes, to think. "I do not know. I was not there with your Astronauts. "

Jack Diamond was getting  impatient, but he knew he needed to form some kind of agreement. "I'm sorry, ma'am, I forget my manners.Let's start at the beggining: Who are you?" he said.
The Moongirl's eyes suddenly sparked.

"I am Hala, Princess of the Moonmaidens" she said.  Jack Diamond  smiled and nodded. "Moonmaidens, right? What are the Moonmaidens?" he replied. Hala shook her head.

"You are asking for a story. Among my nation, whoever asks for a story, has to provide the water." Jack Diamond furrowed his brow. "Why is that?" He asked. "Simple" she replied, with a small smile. "I will tell the story, whether you believe it or not. But I can't dry my mouth trying to convince you I'm telling the truth."

Jack Diamond motioned a soldier to get some water. He sped past Ms Fernandez, who caught Hala's attention.  "Is that your leader?" asked the Moongirl. Jack Diamond threw a smile at the cross Fernandez. "She's Lucy Fernandez. She's  an important person. Frankly, she's asking for 20 percent of you." Hala took that somewhat seriously.

"Well, I welcome her to help herself." Said Hala staring Lucy right in the eyes. "She wouldn't be the first one to try and claim me." Jack became a little worried, as the woman's physique, while toned and slender, seemed to hide a military movements. "You were about to tell me about the Moon Maidens." said he, trying to avoid the subject.

"The Moon Maidens..." she began. "You see, our world was much as yours. It was a planet, and it had a moon. There was man, and there was woman, as well as all the animals and plants. And our God Kokama watched all."

Fernandez' eyes lit up, and her mouth grew small. Jack Diamond had been bracing for such a thing. " So you do come from another planet, huh? Can you tell me where it is?" Said Diamond, producing  a notebook and a pen.

For a short while, she toyed with the pen and the paper until she figured out what they did. Nodding contently, she drew a crude planet earth with a crude moon. "This is your planet, right?" She said, pointing to him the planet.  Jack Diamond just nodded. Hala then ripped the page out and turned it to the other side. She traced the contours of  the faint outline from the drawing on the other side, the faint indentations with just a hint of ink.

"This is where  our planet is, Mr Diamond." Said the Moongirl. Jack Diamond rubbed his temple. His heart beat a little faster at what was being implied there. He thought on this for a few minutes of nervous silence.
